The local culture of Rodrigues

Discover Rodrigues as you can see most of the island in it's original form. Everywhere you will find the friendly local people when you’re strolling along the streets of Port Mathurin which is the heart of the island were everybody meets everybody or along quiet roads in the country. As you will see, the culture on the island has its roots from many places, mainly African but also European and Indian. The local language Creole is a mix from French, African dialects and a little Indian influence. Most of the population are Creole and some have backgrounds from Chinese, Indian, Mauritian and European.

Admire the handcrafted straw hats and bags that people use here, taste our “mixed culture” cuisine but beware for the very spicy Rodriguan Chillies.

In the afternoon enjoy the extraordinary scenery of a romantic sunset, listening to some captivating lascivious local Sega music “Sega: the local music and dance culture which comes from our ancestors”. End the day with a peaceful night dreaming about the next day’s treasures of our little paradise, Rodrigues.
